Capsule Hotel surprises
Why would two 70+ year olds choose this type of accommodation you may well ask? To be honest it was a mistake when choosing a hotel online, being in a hurry and distracted. We tried to cancel
the booking the next day however there was a 'no cancellation' policy so we had to make the most of it for one night and wear the cost for the other 2 nights, putting it down as a learning experience. Luckily it was very cheap per night.
The name Millenials one would think would indicate a youthful environment however we noticed a few people our age and older.
Check in was quite simple and quick with the help of a 3 minute video so guests know what to do. Staff were really friendly and efficient. Issuing each person a small black bag of goodies to take to one's pod. Inside there are slippers, towels, toothpaste and a toothbrush set (sealed) tissues and an iphone as a remote control to electronically change the sofa into a bed, change the lights to dim or bright and even a setting to wake you up at a time of your choice by gradually turning on the lights and raising the bed n your pod. There is also a key to lock the sliding blind while away from your pod. For couples the configuration is usually two pods side by side or two pods opposite each other.
Bedding: the cushions and bedding are like any good hotel, clean with a light plumped up doona looking invitingly good and comfy. The sleeping quarters are air conditioned with great security. The showers and toilets are spotlessly clean and new looking. Shower room and toilet doors closed softly and tightly to reduce noise for people who may be sleeping on that floor.
There are three communal areas adjacent to reception. The modern kitchen is very well equipped with lots of gadgets, crockery, cups and glasses, microwave, cooking gear, two stove tops, oven, fridge/freezer and more importantly... coffee on tap all day.
Everyone is welcome to use the kitchen and in fact there were a couple of guests preparing a delicious smelling meal for their group. Everyone cleans up after themselves.
There was free beer from 5:30_6:30pm. Yes we found that interesting... only for guests of course.
The lounge room had ample comfy chairs to sit on... there was a good community atmospere.
Another interesting space was the shared 'office' workspace where co-workers could use their devices in a shared area. The workspace was well planned with rows of desks with computer access and individual lockers. One could easily run one's small business from that room or visiting business persons could easily work from there.
Surprises I guess were:
1. No television
2. Soft background music (No Hip Hop etc.)
3. Breakfast was simple but good. Small portions of mackerel with ginger and nut sauce. Breadrolls margarine and jam with juice and the ongoing cup of coffee
4. The bed was very comfortable
5. Being enclosed in a capsule was more comforting than it was claustrophobic.
6. It felt a bit like camping and getting into one's tent at night and feeling very private once the doorway is zipped up. A very modern and comfy tent that is.
Would we do it again? Probably not. We like our private bathroom type of accommodation.
Would we recommend this for one night? Yes put it on your bucket list of experiences and things to do at least once in your lifetime. It was different and a cheap way to travel in Japan and the building is situated in a very convenient location, close to stations, shopping and restaurants. Also this is a good way to meet like minded people of any age.
